Description: The University of San Francisco is a private, Roman Catholic institution of higher learning in California. It is affiliated with the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). The university became San Francisco's first institution of higher learning. A Jesuit priest, Anthony Maraschi, founded St. Ignatius Academy in 1855. The school was chartered as St. Ignatius College in 1859. The University of San Francisco has six schools and colleges. The College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business and Management, and the School of Nursing offer bachelor's and master's degrees in such fields as biology, finance, international business, nursing and theology. The School of Education only grants master's and doctor's degrees in such specialized areas as international and multicultural education and private school education. The College of Professional Studies was designed for working adults. It grants bachelor's and master's degrees in several fields within the areas of organizational studies and public management and offers classes from several regional campuses throughout California. Students can earn law degrees from the university's School of Law. The university's facilities include the Center for the Pacific Rim and the Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management. Well-known alumni of the University of San Francisco include Current President of Peru Alejandro Toledo, California Supreme Court Justice Ming Chin, former mayor of San Francisco Frank Jordan, basketball player Bill Russell and professional football executive Pete Rozelle.
