Description: FairPlay,an association of educators since 1984,has developed programs that integrate mathematical reasoning into reading and writing for grades 7 through 14. In 1998 we developed the Knowledge Matrix,which assures that a given percentage of the assignments in reading and writing require mathematical reasoning at the grade level appropriate for each student.A standing interdisciplinary curriculum at each school helps to develop these assignments and instructional materials. Reading and writing teachers do not have to learn how to teach math. Math teachers do not have to learn more about teaching reading or writing.The Matrix enables teachers continuously to help the student associate mathematical reasoning with all subjects so that he or she may come to “see” its importance and usefulness in life.School systems may develop their own reading and writing materials for the Matrix. Or,they may purchase FairPlay’s Matrix program on CD.
